Especially during conflicts we need robust fact based reporting. In light of the attack by Hamas and subsequent Israeli bombing, Free Press Unlimited urges all journalists and media - local, regional and international - to provide information that is accurate, unbiased, contextualized and nuanced. We hereby recognize that the current situation is to be considered within a context of 75 years of conflict.

When reporting on conflicts journalists should strive to report the facts without polarizing the debate, instead ensuring that they are carefully choosing their wording, adding context and perspectives to stories, and not fueling hatred. Free Press Unlimited calls all involved countries and non state actors to ensure access to information, and the safety and security of media practitioners on all sides.

Safety of journalists

Access to reliable information is a human right and can save lives during times of crisis. It is imperative that journalists are able to carry out their work, free from violence and free from obstruction. During armed conflict journalists are to be considered civilians and their safety should be warranted by all parties. We condemn the ongoing killings of journalists and stand with all independent journalists in the region.

This is a continuously escalating situation that we will keep monitoring and updating on. See our most recent updates in our dossier.
