Ukraine: support journalists and public access to reliable information
This morning we all woke up to the unsettling news of the Russian government’s new stage of invasion of Ukraine. In these difficult times, our thoughts and hearts are with the people who defend the right of Ukrainians, and the citizens of all neighbouring nations, to receive trustworthy, accurate and timely information on the current events.
The current situation leaves us in shock and concern for the safety of media workers, and the Ukrainian people at large. Free Press Unlimited stands in solidarity with all the journalists and independent media outlets in Ukraine. We are in touch with our partners on the ground and are in continuous conversation to offer support where we can.
All independent media are faced with a situation where access to independent information and the safety of journalists is under extreme pressure. We request authorities to assist journalists where possible to ensure access to reliable information, and to have special attention to the situation of individual independent journalists that have sought refuge in Ukraine after fleeing the extreme repression in Belarus.
The war against Ukraine is also an information war, led by the Russian government that has been relentless in its spread of lies, propaganda and destabilisation efforts. Information from the war zones is inconsistent at best.
Therefore Free Press Unlimited has stood in support of independent journalists and media outlets in the region since decades. And we will continue to do so and call upon the international community to assist with supporting those in need.
