Personal data
This privacy statement applies to the processing of personal data provided by donors, gift givers, volunteers, (freelance) employees, participants and contacts, and data acquired from visits to and use of our website.
By personal data we mean all information about an identifiable natural person (the ‘data subject’). This means information that is directly about a person or can be traced back to this person. With this privacy statement, Free Press Unlimited would like to inform you about what personal data we collect for which purposes.
Purposes of data processing
During your visit to this website, Free Press Unlimited may collect personal data about you. For example, when you subscribe to our newsletter, request information, ask a question, react on our website or establish contact with us in another way. We may also collect information that you have shared with us via social media, when you like us, share posts, participate in a promotional activity or contact us.
Free Press Unlimited shall only use these data for the purposes described below:
1. To contact you and to inform you about Free Press Unlimited projects. For example, when you use the contact form, the donor form or subscribe to the newsletter on our website.
2. To register web statistics.
3. For the proper fulfillment of the task of the organisation. For example, the conclusion of agreements and relationship management (CRM).
Retention period
Retaining personal data may be necessary for the proper performance of the tasks of the company or to comply with legal obligations. Personal data are not kept longer than necessary.
When you fill out the contact form on our website or send us an email, then we shall keep and process the personal data you send us for as long as this is necessary. How long they are kept depends on the nature of the form or the content of the email and the complete answering and handling thereof. In addition we may keep emails we receive insofar as this is necessary for the proper execution of our regular activities.
Newsletters
For all our mailing lists, your email address shall only be added to the list of subscribers with your consent. Every newsletter contains a clear link with which you can unsubscribe. We manage the maintenance, management and the security of software for the mailing lists ourselves.
Contact information management
We use the open source software CiviCRM to manage our contact data. This software is run under our own management on our own servers.
If, in the context of our work, you have voluntarily provided us with contact information with the intention that we can reach you via these contact details, for example by providing us with a business card, we save these data for the purpose of managing our relationships.
Data from contacts can also be stored locally in the personal address books of Free Press Unlimited employees. Of course we will delete your contact information from our systems on request.
Privacy for job applicants
The data and documents that are provided by the applicant are processed by Free Press Unlimited to determine whether the applicant qualifies for a position within Free Press Unlimited. In order to make a good selection of candidates for the right vacancies, the recruitment and selection process at Free Press Unlimited may consist of: comparing the data of the applicant with the vacancy (vacancies) and the corresponding qualifications and contacting them if necessary to learn more about them. Where applicable, we may contact the specified referees.
In addition, the data may be processed to pass on information to the applicant concerned about other vacancies for which the applicant may be eligible. Data from the applicant may also be distributed within Free Press Unlimited to see whether an applicant is eligible for another position other than the one he applied for.
Free Press Unlimited processes personal data that may be relevant to the recruitment and selection procedure. In any event, this concerns the information provided by the applicant, including name and address details, other contact details, gender, date of birth of the applicant. What is also relevant, is the education, courses followed, trainee ships and job history of the applicant. For certain positions a certificate of good conduct may be requested. If it is necessary for the job, applicants may be subjected to a screening and an assessment. In that case, the persons responsible for carrying that out will be given the personal data necessary for the purpose of the screening or the assessment.
Free Press Unlimited keeps the data from applicants up to four weeks after the completion of the recruitment and selection process.
An applicant has the right to inspect the processing of his personal data. Requests in this area should be addressed to the email address below. In response to such a request, an applicant may ask that his data be corrected, supplemented, removed or screened off, for example if the data is factually incorrect.
Special personal data
Free Press Unlimited does not collect data pertaining to political views, race, religious views, health, criminal information or other matters.
Security
Free Press Unlimited ensures the personal data are correct and complete before these are processed. Free Press Unlimited has taken physical, technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data. We use a secure server that is accessible only to authorised persons. This should prevent personal data being accessed or modified by persons not authorised to do so.
We shall never pass on your personal data to third parties, if this does not explicitly follow our privacy statement. The only two exceptions to this are:
- If we explicitly request your consent prior to the provision to third parties;
- If we are legally required to do so, and only after we have done our utmost to avoid provision on the basis of a legal obligation.
Our website uses a reliable SSL Certificate to guarantee that your personal data do not fall into the wrong hands. We take every measure that can be reasonably expected to arrange security in the best way possible.
Donations
When it comes to donations, we process the personal data you, as donor or friend of Free Press Unlimited, have provided to us to handle the one-off or repeat donation. For repeat donations, these are your bank account number, name and email address, the amount of the donation, the start date and frequency of the donation.
It is also possible to transfer your donation directly to our bank account. In that case, the personal data necessary for the transfer of the amount will be processed by your bank and our bank.
Other activities
For all other activities and events organised by Free Press Unlimited, like Free Press Live or other campaigns where the input from stakeholders is requested, Free Press Unlimited shall ask for as little personal data as possible. If we work jointly with other organisations on campaigns, for example in the European context, we shall insist that a clear privacy policy is conducted.
Social media
We have buttons for the social networks Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn on our website, so it is easy for you to share information about Free Press Unlimited. These buttons are bits of code from the social media themselves, and use a cookie. This cookie remembers that you are logged in so that you do not have to log in every time you want to share something on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.
To see what the social media platforms do with your personal data, you may inspect the privacy statements of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Facebook and Twitter cookies are only placed if you are logged in to Facebook during a visit and have given your permission. By installing a program such as ‘Disconnect’ for Chrome and Firefox, you can switch off this feature.
In blog articles, content that has been imported from other sources or sites can be used and offered on the Free Press Unlimited website. For example, YouTube videos. Just like the social buttons, these codes often use cookies. What they do with the cookies and personal data, can be found in the privacy policy of the service concerned. That is out of our control.
Other websites
Links to other websites do not fall under the responsibility of Free Press Unlimited.
The use of cookies
We use cookies when we offer content on our website. A cookie is a small, simple data file that is stored on your computer’s hard disc or is located in your browser session. This session cookie contains no personal data and its sole purpose is to make it easier for you to use the site.
Cookies to monitor statistics
To monitor the user statistics on our website, we use the open source software Matomo. A Matomo cookie is placed via our website. Because these analytical cookies have a minimal impact on your privacy, you do not need to give your consent for this.
Social media cookies
We also use social media features to share pages easily. To this end, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn features are deployed. We have no influence over the cookies they place when you use this functionality.
Marketing cookies
Personalising advertising
Free Press Unlimited uses retargeting on its websites. We use this technique to make the Internet offer even more interesting for you. This enables us to offer relevant advertising to Internet users who have already shown interest in Free Press Unlimited's campaigns or products on other websites. Free Press Unlimited is convinced that displaying personalised advertising is more interesting for the Internet user than advertising that is not relevant to the user. The display of these advertisements on partner pages is done with the help of cookies and the analysis of previous user behaviour.
Advertisements and remarketing
Free Press Unlimited uses the so-called Facebook (Meta) Pixel, the Twitter Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Google tag and Google Analytics pixel for remarketing and conversion tracking.
These are pieces of JavaScript code that can track which pages visitors to Free Press Unlimited view. This allows Free Press Unlimited to measure the use of its website(s) and get to know its target groups. For example, visitors who have visited our website before may be shown an advertisement. Our ads can also be shown to similar target groups that have not yet visited our website.
In addition, conversion from Google, Facebook (Meta), Twitter and LinkedIn can be tracked. This enables Free Press Unlimited to measure and fine-tune its advertising campaigns. This enables Free Press Unlimited to advertise on social media in a more effective and targeted way.

The way in which you can do this depends on the browser you use. You must take into account that certain parts of a website will not function or will not function optimally when you block cookies.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) your rights include the right to access personal data we have collected on you and in certain cases to modify them or have them removed.
