In Memoriam: Gwen Robinson

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Gwen Robinson, an exceptional journalist, mentor and champion of press freedom in the Asian media landscape. Gwen's passing is a loss not only for those who knew her personally, but also for the many journalists, media organisations and independent newsrooms she tirelessly supported throughout her illustrious career.
Gwen was a force of nature in the world of journalism. Her vast experience across multiple countries in Asia, coupled with her unwavering dedication, made her a formidable figure in the media industry. She was driven by an insatiable curiosity and a commitment to uncovering the truth. But beyond her own reporting, Gwen dedicated herself to uplifting under-resourced media outlets, mentoring young journalists, and championing press freedom in some of the most challenging environments.
Her impact extended far beyond the stories she wrote. Gwen played a pivotal role in expanding Free Press Unlimited’s network, bringing together media support organisations, independent journalists, and press freedom advocates across Asia. Gwen was also on the board of Exile Hub for Myanmar women journalists in exile, an initiative supported by Free Press Unlimited (FPU). She was instrumental in the conceptualisation and facilitation of the Mekong Fund. Her deep, on-the-ground experience spanning multiple years provided invaluable insights that shaped the work of FPU. Her contributions strengthened the resilience of independent media in regions where press freedom is under constant threat.
Gwen’s generosity of spirit, wisdom, and boundless energy left a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of working with her. We are deeply grateful to have crossed paths with Gwen and to have worked alongside her. Her legacy will continue in the journalists she mentored, the media organizations she strengthened, and the countless stories she helped bring to light.
