Our work on journalist safety

Around the world, journalists face unprecedented levels of repression. This threatens the public's right to access information. Since 2012 Free Press Unlimited has supported over 8000 journalists through our emergency fund Reporters Respond, for example with temporary relocation, legal support, and safety equipment like ballistic vests. This interactive map visualises the support we provided to journalists in distress worldwide.

These visualizations show the amount of emergency interventions FPU has provided across countries around the globe. During each event, more than one individual may have received support. The level of emergency assistance we provide to journalists in distress is influenced by how accessible a country is, how dangerous the situation is, how well journalists in need have free and secure access to the internet (to apply for help), and most important: the financial resources we have available. In some regions, security concerns or restrictions make it difficult to offer direct support, even when the need is high. As a result, fluctuations in the number of journalists we help do not necessarily reflect a decrease in need, but rather the challenges of access and funding that shape our ability to respond effectively.
